Top 10 “I can’t believe it’s not a Remake” Films [Linwood’s Picks]
I am a firm believer in the philosophy that “Everything Is a Remix” and that copyright laws, more often than not, stifle creativity for the sake of making a profit on a concept that itself tied together several sources of influence. With that said, as a creator myself, I do believe there is a fine line when it comes to using intellectual property as the skeleton of what you’re developing. Especially if you do not acknowledge that the striking similarities are a result of you drawing inspiration from what’s being claimed as your primary inspiration.
Below are my Top 10 films that you wouldn’t have noticed their conceptually related stories recreated some of the exact same plot points in a similar order from cinema released prior. A few of these have actually faced lawsuits and lost or settled. A couple are from a well-known filmmaker who has once said “I steal from every single movie ever made,” and one entry is a picture that I consider became a mess by its director trying too hard to deviate from its borrowed premise. Paying homage can be beautiful or a critical and financial disaster, but what’s for sure, is integrity matters.
